ADV: The continuous training of specialists is an essential requisite for reliability in service companies

January 19, 2018 – A company specializing in the service and maintenance of CHP and biogas plants can become a reliable partner only by getting to know the client and its needs and by ensuring that its specialists undergo continuous training. STORM, a “service provider” operating in Europe, is particularly proud to have experts who are trained in both precision mechanics and electronics, thus providing clients with a single technical contact with both competencies.

What to consider when setting up biogas unit

January 20, 2018 – A farmer who intends to install a small scale biogas system (6-32m3) has a number of considerations to make. This includes and not limited to: the design of the unit, its capacity, how much gas to expect from the plant, cost of the system, safety of the gas, management of the system and how to store excess gas.

Granville Ecopark becomes first UK anaerobic digestion plant certified under new performance scheme

January 22, 2018 – The UK’s anaerobic digestion (AD) industry has welcomed a target from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for all of England’s soils to be “managed sustainably” by 2030, calling it “an important step in the right direction” towards restoring the UK’s soils. Defra’s 25-year environment plan, published this morning, calls for “good nutrient management practices” in soil management and pledges to work with industry “to encourage the use of low emissions fertiliser”.

EPA: Nearly 230 million cellulosic RINs generated in 2017

January 22, 2018 – The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for December, reporting that nearly 1.68 billion RINs were generated during the month, including more than 27.08 million cellulosic RINs. For the full year 2017, a net total of 19.29 billion RINs were generated. Approximately 26.76 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in December, bringing the net total for 2017 to 227.38 million. Approximately 10.05 million D3 RINs were generated for ethanol, with 141.24 million generated for renewable compressed natural gas and 76.14 million generated for renewable liquefied natural gas. More than 139.78 million D3 RINs were generated domestically, with 33.65 million generated by importers.

California utilities issue solicitation for dairy biomethane projects

January 22, 2018 – Southern California Gas (SoCalGas), San Diego Gas & Electric, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Southwest Gas have jointly issued a draft solicitation for dairy biomethane pilot projects. The solicitation is issued under California Senate Bill 1383, and projects proposed must demonstrate the ability to capture and process biogas from cows to produce renewable natural gas. SB1383 has been created to reduce methane emissions from agriculture in the state by 2020.

Draft solicitation issued for California dairy RNG program

January 23, 2018 – A group of California utilities recently issued a draft solicitation for dairy biomethane pilot projects under California SB 1383. Proposed projects must demonstrate an ability to capture and process biogas from dairy cows to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). At least five projects will be selected under the solicitation. The draft solicitation is the first step in a new program created by the California Public Utilities Commission under SB 1383, which established a goal to reduce California’s methane emissions 40 percent by 2030. As part of this goal, the bill authorizes funding of the dairy biomethane pilot projects to demonstrate interconnection to the gas pipeline system. The pipeline infrastructure is needed to inject RNG into the utilities’ natural gas distribution system. The CPUC announced the program in December.

EBRD supports development of biogas CHP projects in Belarus

January 24, 2018 – The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is supporting renewable power generation and foreign investment in Belarus by financing the construction of four biogas combined-heat-and-power plants (CHPs) across the country. A loan of up to $15 million to three special purpose companies owned by the Lithuanian UAB Modus Group will be used to construct and put into operation four biogas CHP plants with total installed capacity of 4 MW. The plants will be located in the Grondo and Brest regions in the north-west and south-west of Belarus, respectively.

Biogas in the USA: potential for approximately 14,000 new plants

January 25, 2018 – According to data published by the American Biogas Council there are currently 2000 biogas plants operating in the United States, with a potential for up to 14,000 new installations over the next few years. Biomethane is also gaining popularity thanks to its proven benefits. However, renewable energies such as solar and wind power continue to benefit from incentives, although two bills are currently being debated in the Senate, one relating to cogeneration (HR1090) and the other to biogas (HR4137).

ADBA Scottish National Conference – 28th February 2018

January 25, 2018 – Could the rise of AD plants put food security at risk, as the draft from distilleries that was traditionally used as animal feed is now diverted to AD plants? Is too much land being used for energy crops, taking it away from food production? The panelists will discuss how the farming and AD communities can operate in synergy. Panellists at the forthcoming ADBA Scottish National Conference next month will discuss how the farming and AD communities can operate in synergy in a dedicated session around this key question. The conference will be a great opportunity to share the latest insights on AD prospects in Scotland.
